A 12-step call is an important part of the recovery process for many. It is said that nothing is more effective than one alcoholic talking to another. A 12-step call does not always mean that you must go on a call to pick someone up… many times the call can be handled from your telephone, because the caller might want only information at the time. Keep in mind that the main objective is to get the person to a place where they can get help. This is usually an A.A. meeting in their area or pointing them in the direction of where they may obtain further information for treatment.
This commitment is a very key part of the Hotline process and may involve less phone work. Your name, phone number, general location, and gender are put on a list that the Central Office and hotline volunteers use if they determine a caller needs to either talk on the phone with another alcoholic, needs a ride to a meeting, or needs an actual 12th Step visit. We protect the anonymity of the people on the 12th Step list. We call you and give you the number of the caller. We never give your number to a caller.
